Historical evolution：School of Information and Control (SIC) at NUIST was initially established in 1993 as Department of Information and Communication Engineering. After adjustment, SIC was officially founded in 2006. SIC was authorized to confer Master degree in 1998. Since 2011, the school has gained the first and second phase of advantageous project of sensor networks and modern meteorological equipment etc. in Jiangsu Province. In 2016, Control Science and Engineering was awarded as the nurturing centers of Jiangsu Province in ”13th Five Year Plan” Key Disciplines.
Major setup: SIC is equipped with three undergraduate programs, including Automation, Measurement Technology & Instrument, and Electrical Engineering & Automation; an academic master degree of Control Science and Engineering and a technical master degree of Control Engineering; two doctor stations of Meteorology Information Technology and Science and Technology of Thunder and Lightning. Automation was rewarded as Characteristic Discipline and Key Discipline of Jiangsu Province, selected in the provincial outstanding engineers plan. Measurement Technology and Instrument has been one of the Key Disciplines of Jiangsu Province.
Faculty（teaching staff）：The school has 84 staff, including 70 core faculties, 20 professors and 21 vice-professors, 7 doctorate supervisors and 39 supervisors of master degree. More than 92 percent of faculties hold a doctor's degree or higher, among whom 55% have studied or trained abroad for one year or more. The school possesses Jiangsu Innovative and Entrepreneurial Project Team ”Big Data Analysis Team ”, Jiangsu University of Scientific and Technological Innovation Team “Micro Network Intelligent Control Team”, Jiangsu Qin-lan Project of Scientific and Technological Innovation Team “Computational Intelligence Team”. Up to now, there are 1 professor elected in New Century Talent Supporting Project by education ministry, 2 gainers of National Outstanding Young Science Foundation Project, 2 talents of Jiangsu Innovative and Entrepreneurial Project, 1 chair professor of Jiangsu province, 3 winners of Jiangsu Outstanding Young Foundation, 7 developing objects of Provincial 6th Talent Peak Project and 4 of Jiangsu Qin-lan Project.
Research(scientific research): SIC has a Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Big Data Analysis Technology, a Jiangsu Engineering Research Center on Meteorological Energy Using and Control, a Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center on Atmospheric Environment and Equipment Technology, 3 scientific research platforms founded by central government and local government (Measurement Technique and Meteorological Instruments, Intelligent Control and System Integration, Motor and Drive System) and 6 school-enterprise institutes. The school has formed 4 directions of research, including "Big Data Analysis Technology", "Intelligent Instrument and Measurement Technology", "Robot Technology and Intelligent Control" and "Power System Analysis and Integration". In the recent 5 years, the school has implemented 48 projects from National Natural Science Foundation (including 2 key projects, 1 cooperative research project between organizations and 2 projects of Outstanding Young Plan), 44 research projects of provincial and ministerial level, more than 80 projects of social service. The total amount of research funding has exceeded sixty million Yuan. At the same time, more than 700 research theses were published, 120 of which have been indexed by SCI(38 papers in Area-II or high). Furthermore, athe school published 3 monographs, gained 95 authorization of patents for invention and 483 new practical patents, and won 6 prizes at the provincial and ministerial level.
The quality of teaching: The school was awarded the first state-level prize of Achievement in Education, the first and second prize of Jiangsu Achievement in Education, etc. more than 40 prizes, gaining in addition more than 70projects of teaching reform approved by the ministry of education and provincial office of education and the undergraduate practice and innovation training programs. The school of SIC has a Jiangsu Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center on Automation, a Jiangsu Practice Education Demonstration Center on Internet of Things Engineering and an Experimental Teaching Center on Electrical Engineering. The school was approved to be the Ministry of Education Management Information Center of the National Industry Automation Accreditation Train and Test and Jiangsu Base for Popular Science Education. The Principle of Microcomputer, Principle and Interface Technology of Microprocessors, Principle and Application of sensor and Process Control were selected as Jiangsu University of Quality curriculum and the excellent courseware of the Ministry of Education Management Information Center.
Cultivation of talents: According to the development of local economy and the needs of meteorology industry, the school sticks to combining Control Engineering, Instrument Science and Technology, Electrical Engineering with strategic emerging industries and its related areas such as Information Technology, and cultivating high-quality specialists with strong theory foundations, excellent practice ability and innovation ability. In recent years, our students made major achievement in subject competition at or above the provincial level and won over 140 prizes such as the special-class award of National Robot Competition, the first prize of “Freescale” Cup National Smart Car Contest and the first prize of China Postgraduate Methematical Contest In Modeling etc. In addition, our students gained Jiangsu Excellent Master Dissertation, Outstanding Graduation Design Team, the first prize of Outstanding Graduation Design, etc. for many times. Our graduates have rich occupation fields, about 20% of them are recommended for admission or admitted to domestic and overseas well-known universities and institutes to study further. And the most of graduates are employed in all kinds of enterprises and institutions in Yangtze river delta. In recent years, the high-level employment of the graduates has maintained steadily at the rate of 98%, and most of the graduates receive high praise from employers.
