Department of Automation at Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology was established in 2002, offering Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with automation. After 10 years' development, the Department has made great achievements in teaching and research, trained over 375 graduates with B.S. degrees, and thus has become an important R&D base for automation science and technologies in automation field, playing an important role for China's construction of modernization. Since 2002, the Department has kept the sole and broad major, automation, for undergraduate program to meet the needs of technical innovation and socialist market economy, to strengthen the fundamental expertise and to broaden the professional scope.

The primary educational mission of the department is to provide outstanding BS level training in the following critical areas of automation engineering and technology:
• Control theory and engineering;
• Electrical and electronic technology;
• Computer science, technology and their applications; network technology;
• System design, system operation;
• Management and decision-making in the system analysis;
• Signal and information processing;

As of September 2012, the Department census was as follows:
• 20 core departmental faculty including 10 full & associated professors;
• Over 10 graduate program faculty;
• More than 336 undergraduate students;
• Research funding about RMB 8.9 million;
• Published 145 scientific papers, including 21 SCI and 42 EI indexed papers;
• 13 invention patents and 51 utility model patents;

The basic curriculum of BS degree program in the Department includes Calculus, Advanced physics, Linear Algebra, Engineering Mathematics, Probability Theory, Circuit Theory, Electronics Technology, Computer Applications, Microcomputer Principle and Interface Technology, C Programming Language, Engineering Drawing, Fundamental of Software Technology, Database Theory and Application, Signal and Systems, Principle of Automatic Control, Process Control Systems, Computer Control Technology, Data Communications and Computer Networks, and so on.

The career opportunities for graduates of the Department are promising with abundant choices. Every year, the demand for our graduates outnumbers the supply. Many of the undergraduates are admitted for direct study of Doctor or Master degree, and the remaining students can find satisfactory jobs in scientific research institutes, universities, state key enterprises, and well-known domestic and foreign companies in accordance with the principle of “two-way selection”, which can give full play to their professional knowledge or skills. Graduates from the Department shall engage in scientific research, teaching, system design, new product development, hardware and software development in various fields of control science and control engineering, as well as the administrative work in the finance department, enterprises and institutions and the state administrative departments. Some graduates also start their own businesses, operating all types of high-tech companies, making contributions to the automation and information industries of China.
