On the afternoon of October 24th, the 10th anniversary cooperation celebration between NUIST and Waterford Institute of Technology was held in student activity center of NUIST. Ambassador of Ireland to the People’s Republic of China Mr. Eoin O’Leary, Consul General of Ireland to Shanghai Ms. Therese Healy, Director China, Enterprise Ireland Mr. David Byrne, President of Ireland Waterford Institute of Technology Mr. Willie Donnelly, President of NUIST Prof. Li Beiqun and Vice President of Financial Affairs Prof. Hu Mingbao attended the cooperation ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Hu Mingbao.
President Li Beiqun expressed warm congratulations on the success of the 10th anniversary celebration between NUIST and WIT on behalf of all the faculty and students of NUIST. He said that NUIST had achieved striding development in many aspects during the past diligent years. NUIST is on the list of China’s "Double First-rate" universities and disciplines and is included in the provincial high-level universities in Jiangsu Province. The discipline of Atmospheric Science ranked No.1 in the national discipline evaluation conducted by the Minister of Education. Since 2015, the disciplines of Geoscience, Engineering and Computer Science have entered top 1% ESI international discipline ranking one after another. The internationalization rate of full-time teachers reached 60.1%. International joint program ranked top among the similar universities. NUIST has cultivated meteorological talents for more than 150 countries all over the world and established overseas Confucius Institute. Over the past decade, the two universities have made great achievements on cooperation and trained students that of good quantity and quality. He expected further cooperation between the two universities and more contributions to educational and cultural cooperation and exchanges between China and Ireland.
As student representative of the joint program, Rong Huan, graduate of 2013 delivered a speech. He said that the courses offered by WIT has established a solid foundation for his learning and working. Four years of study made him understand the importance of “Be responsible for yourself, keep habits of learning”. Focusing on details, proceeding step by step are the most precious treasure he has ever gained.
President Willie Donnelly said that the Waterford Institute of Technology has world class research centers in Telecommunications, Agritech, Biopharma and Advanced Manufacturing, which provided students with a lot of opportunities to apply what they have learned. Over the past decade, students who were co-trained could use the critical thinking, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to solve practical problems. With the increasing globalization of industry, there ushered a better time for the cooperation. He hoped that the two universities could further strengthen cooperation in the future and expand the undergraduate joint program to master, doctor and other programs to cultivate more qualified engineering graduates who are competent for economic needs of China and expected a new chapter in cooperation.
Ambassador Mr. Eoin O’Leary delivered a speech and declared the opening of the celebration ceremony. He said that Ireland attaches great importance to exchanges and cooperation with China and thinks highly of education. Ireland is also a nation full of humanistic concern and provides comfortable learning environment and preferential study policy for Chinese students who study in Ireland every year, which has been widely praised. Waterford Institute of Technology played an important role in economic transformation, which cultivated a large number of outstanding students with NUIST. Some of them further their study and some work in top enterprises. He believes that Ireland is one of the best overseas study destinations and he welcomes more Chinese students to study in Ireland.
Subsequently, the celebration ceremony began with Irish-style folk songs presented by the band The Bucks' . Fangye Hard Shoe Dance Group performed a glamorous hard shoe dance. The Chinese folk music ensemble named Aroma of Books was melodious and magnificent. The Chinese folk dance Drizzle in a Bamboo Glove fully demonstrated national characteristics of China, which made the celebration more enthusiastic, cozier and cheerful.
After the celebration ceremony, the head of study abroad program of Waterford Institute of Technology introduced relative situation of studying in Ireland and interacted with students at the scene.
It is known that the joint program with Irish Waterford Institute of Technology is the earliest international joint programs in NUIST with the largest number of students enrollment. It is also the first international joint program of Ireland Waterford Institute of Technology in China, which has cultivated 651 students by now. Leaders of WIT and officials of Asian Cooperation Affairs come to NUIST every year to promote cooperation and sent teachers to NUIST every semester. NUIST also sent teachers to Ireland in batches for training. During the period of cooperation, NUIST has held many Irish cultural exchanges theme activities, which further deepened students' understanding of Irish culture and promoted international cultural exchanges.
