History

The School of Mathematics and Statistics, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, begins undergraduate enrollment in math major from 1978. The school contains teaching and research institution including: department of mathematics and applied mathematics, department of information and computing science, department of statistics, department of college mathematics, mathematical education experimental center, space weather research institution, fluid dynamics research institution and so on. The school offers the first grade PhD’s degree and master’s degree in mathematics, the second grade PhD’s degree and master’s degree in space weather and professional master degree in applied statistics. “Mathematics” is the key discipline of China Meteorological Administration. In 2016 the school was selected as “Excellent” in the master’s degree authorization first grade discipline evaluation.



Disciplines

The school offers three undergraduate disciplines including information and computing science, applied statistics, and mathematics and applied mathematics, which are all key specialties of Jiangsu Province. Information and computing science is comprehensive reform experimental major of Minister of Education, brand specialty of Jiangsu Province and embedded training specialty of Jiangsu Province. The school cultivates a number of prominent alumni including “1,000 Talents Plan” and tenured professors in USA and European countries, and makes important contributions in the field of numerical prediction, climatic statistics, data assimilation and the application of differential equation, etc.

(1) Focus on the problem-driven theoretical research, and already have some influence in the world in the research field of fluid dynamics, scientific computation, statistical inference, time series, algebra and number theory and so on.

(2) Emphasis on the intersection and integration with the atmospheric sciences, develop mathematics dominant applied technology to solve key problems in interdiscipline, and is in the leading international level for the application of typhoon diagnosis by multiple linear model, the application of data assimilation by control theory, earth system model and so on.



Faculty

The School of Mathematics and Statistics has 94 full-time teachers, including 21 professors, 41 associate professors, 11 doctoral supervisors, 1 European full-time professor. Teachers receive talent projects as National Thousand Talents Program, Chinese Academy of Sciences Hundreds Talents Program, Fok Ying-Tong Education Foundation, Distinguished Professor of Jiangsu Province for more than 38 times. All the full-time teachers under 55 have doctor degrees. 71.4% of teachers have the experience to study abroad, in which 16 teachers obtained Phd degree or post-doctoral degree from foreigner famous universities as Harvard University and Kuran institute of mathematics. The school also has 4 Provincial and ministerial teams as “Double Innovation team of Jiangsu Province” and teaching group of China Meteorological Administration.



Scientific Research

In recent five years, the school has undertaken 56 national projects, including “973” Program, key program of NSFC and so on, where the research fund is altogether 26.867 million. In recent years the school has published 493 papers which are indexed by SCI. Some papers are published in famous mathematical journals such as Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., Adv. Math., J. Funct. Anal., SIAM. 10 papers are in ESI high cited paper database and hot paper database which attack extensive attention. In recent years the school has 19 issued patents. The school receives many honors, such as WMO highest award “Norbert Gerbier-Mumm”(2001), “first award for scientific-technical progress of Jiangsu Province”(2015), “second award for higher education excellent scientific research achievement of Ministry of Education” (2015),“first award for educational scientific research achievement of Jiangsu Province”(2016).

The school possesses the experimental demonstration center of Jiangsu Province and the statistical research base of Jiangsu Province. The laboratory center has high performance calculation system, which has a sustained computing speed of 126 trillion operations per second, 12 workstations and more than 250 computer terminals. The school also possesses the platforms such as national joint virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration center and big data key laboratory of Jiangsu Province. This can provide superior teaching and research platform for the students. The school also own 4 enterprise cooperative education platform of Ministry of Education and 5 enterprise postgraduate workstations of Jiangsu Province, which can provide excellent social resource for enhancing the students’ innovation and enterprise ability.



Talents Training

The school has established international cooperation with University of Reading, Florida state university and so on. The school have edited the English version of 《Journal of Information and Computing Science》and 《World Journal of Modelling and Simulation》, organized a series of international meetings and seminars, and undertaken extensive academic exchange and cooperation.Additionally, the school has 12 foreign part-time specially-appointed professors, who work in the university between one month and three months every year. The school also co-supervise graduates with cooperative universities abroad and carry out leading lectures and a series of seminars which build rich academic atmosphere. 61.5% students from the joint international curriculum experimental class have been enrolled in the global 200 universities.



Degree Programs

The school enrolls more than 130 doctors and postgraduates every year. The postgraduates received good social evaluations. Many postgraduates receive excellent dissertation of Jiangsu Province, and the excellent ratio for the postgraduate dissertations rank up to the top in the Jiangsu Province.

The postgraduate education receives many awards such as “second award for postgraduate training mode reformation of Jiangsu Province”(2015), “second award for postgraduate educational reformation achievement of Jiangsu Province”(2017), “first award for NPMCM”, etc.

The school has more than 800 undergraduates. Recently the school closely focus on the need for talents with basic foundation in the field of territorial economy and meteorology, and the urgent need for newly arisen industries from the market, such as high performance calculation, cloud computing and big data, combine the advantage of atmospheric sciences and information discipline and international resources, and construct multicultural talent cultivation model. The school adheres to talent cultivation orientation of “elite, internationality, technique”, adopts the cultivation method of “enrolling as major, cultivating from large subject, diverting by interest” and opened many characteristic class in accordance with the need of the society, including: “atmospheric science mathematical class”, “information and computing science (international curriculum experimental class)”, “mathematics and applied mathematics (mathematics and meteorology Changwang international advanced class)” and “NUIST Reading Academy mathematics and applied mathematics class”.

The school receives many awards in undergraduate talent training, such as“first award for national teaching achievement”(2014), unique CUMCM highest award “Higher Education Press Trophy” (2011), MCM/ICM outstanding award (2012,2018), “outstanding award for teaching achievement of Jiangsu Province”(2011)/ “first award for teaching achievement of Jiangsu Province”(2017)/ “second award for teaching achievement of Jiangsu Province”(2013). The school also receives many awards as national brand curriculum, excellent curriculum of Jiangsu Province, key textbook of Jiangsu Province, excellent textbook of China Meteorological Administration.

The employment rate of graduates is over 99.7%, in which the high quality employment rate is over 98.2%. The graduates are engaged in research, teaching and technology development in the field of government agencies, research institution, education, IT, meteorology, finances and so on. Many graduates have been enrolled in domestic and foreign famous universities such as Cornell University, University of Edinburgh, Columbia University, Imperial College London, Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, and the rate of study abroad and as a postgraduate is over 30%.

Discipline

Research field,feature and advantage

Pure Mathematics

Research field:functional analysis、differential equation、ring and algebra representation theory、number theory.

Feature:The team has some influence in functional differential equation, number theory and combinatorics.

Advantages:

  1. The team has 5 professors, including 1 European professor. All the full-time teachers in

the team have doctor degrees and 85% of teachers have the experience to study abroad, including foreigner famous universities as Cambridge University and National University of Singapore.

⑵ The team has undertaken 13 national projects,8 provincial projects,1 DAAD fund and 7

National and provincial Studying Abroad Scholarships. Teachers in the team has published papers in famous mathematical journals such as Adv. Math., Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., J. Funct. Anal., Math. Z., Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations, also give group report in ICM.


Dynamical System and the Application of Meteorology

Research field:dynamic model and theory analysis、solution of mathematical problems in the application field of meteorology.

Feature:solve key mathematical problems in control, meteorology and ocean to form the mathematics dominated application technique.

Advantages:

  1. The team has 5 professors, in which 92% of teachers have doctor degrees and many

teachers obtained Phd degree or post-doctoral degree from foreigner famous universities as Harvard University and Kuran institute of mathematics.

⑵The team has undertaken 14 funds, including:key program of NSFC, national projects and key programs of national industries, in which the total fund is over 10 million. Teachers in the team has published more than 130 papers in famous mathematical journals such as SIAM J. Multiscale Model. Simul., Phys. Rev. Lett., Internat. J. Robust Nonlinear Control.

(3)The team receives “first award for natural science of Jiangsu Province” and is at the front of discipline development in the field of atmospheric mathematics.


Computational Mathematics

Research field:design and analysis of high accurate algorithm, numerical algebra, information processing and application.

Feature:research on the numerical solution of differential equation, pattern recognition and

image processing to assist data processing and medical diagnosis.

Advantages:

(1)The team has 6 professors, 2 doctoral supervisor, in which 83% of teachers have doctor degrees.

(2)The team has undertaken 16 funds and published more than 180 SCI papers. The team has rich training effect, and receives “first award for teaching achievement of Jiangsu Province”.

(3)The team has long cooperation with international famous universities and has 2

Chin-Korean joint funds. The team has edited the English version of 《Journal of Information and Computing Science》(12 volumes, 48 issues)and consecutively organized 5 international information and computing science meetings.












Probability and Statistic, climate diagnosis

Research field:steady statistical inference, high-dimensional data analysis, extremum distribution theory and climate diagnosis.

Feature:research on the high-dimensional and functional complex big data inference, modern statistic method motivated by climate diagnosis and prediction.

Advantages:

(1)The team has 6 professors, 2 doctoral supervisor, and undertaken 13 funds, including: key program of NSFC, national projects and national social science fund. The team possesses big data key laboratory of Jiangsu Province and the statistical research base of Jiangsu Province.

⑵ The team applies multiple linear correlation model to typhoon diagnosis and prediction, receives WMO highest award “Norbert Gerbier-Mumm” and receives “first award for scientific-technical progress of Jiangsu Province”. Teachers in the team has published more than 72 papers in famous mathematical journals such as Stat. Methods Med. Res., Stat. Comput.
