Introduction
The development of the “Environmental Science and Engineering” discipline always follows around the national strategic needs closely, and supports the environment and meteorological industries at the same time. The discipline was issued with the “Second-grade Master’s Degree Authorization” at 2003, became the “Key Discipline of Chinese Meteorological Bureau” at 2008, enrolled into the co-construction of “National Characteristic Discipline” and the “Professional Master’s Degree Authorization of Environmental Engineering” at 2009, and approved by the Ministry of Education as the “First-grade Master’s Degree Authorization Discipline” at 2010. The discipline was selected into the “Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions” at 2011, and the discipline was assessed as “excellent” at 2014. Until now, the discipline was continuously funded by the Jiangsu government under the programme. After that, the discipline was issued with the “State-level Environmental Engineering Practical Education Center” and the “Twelve-five” Key discipline of Jiangsu Province at 2012. In 2015, the discipline was selected into the “Top-notch Academic Programs Project of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions”, and it was issued with the “Second-grade Doctor’s and Master’s Degrees Authorization” in Environmental meteorology in the same year. The discipline also was awarded as the “National Demonstrative Joint Training base for Professional Master’s Degree in Engineering”, in which only 37 disciplines were awarded on a national scale. The discipline was issued with the “First-grade Doctor’s Degree Authorization” at 2018. The discipline ranked 16th in the “Allison China Alumni Association” and ranked 21st in the latest “Shanghai Soft Science China Best Subjects”. As a member of the “China Environmental Science Society”, the “Chinese Chemical Society”, and the “Jiangsu Environmental Science Society” for a long time, our college has cultivated a large number of personnel for the environmental protection engineering technology, scientific research and administrative management. Our discipline, with over one decade’s development, has made remarkable achievements.
Orientations and Missions
Keep closely the integration of the experiments, theoretical analyses, numerical modeling and industrial applications, and conduct the key and perspective basic and applied research in solving various serious environmental problems; cultivate extraordinary talents and research teams, and aim for the domestic first-class discipline and internationally renowned discipline; Focus on “innovative research, innovative engineering, innovative planning”, and continuously strength our capability in the fields of energy saving, pollution control, etc., and serve the sustainable developments of national and local green economy.
Superiorities and Features
Based on the advantages in atmospheric science of our university, the discipline focuses on atmospheric environmental research, strengths the disciplinary crossing and integration of environmental science and environmental engineering, and raise the level and international influences via various cross-country collaborations. The superiorities of our discipline are listed below: (1) High-standard and high-quality “Priority discipline”: Environmental science and engineering (“Priority discipline of Jiangsu province”), Environmental Science (“national characteristic discipline”), Environmental Science (“Top-notch Academic Programs Project of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions”); (2) High-tech research and educational platforms: National demonstrative Joint training base for Professional master’s degree in Engineering, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment Monitoring and Pollution Control (AEMPC), Collaborative Innovation Center of Atmospheric Environment and Equipment Technology (CIC-AEET), Jiangsu Engineering Technology Research Center of Environmental Cleaning Materials, Jiangsu Joint Laboratory of Atmospheric Pollution Control, National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of atmospheric Environment and Environmental meteorology, National Environmental engineering Practical Education Center; (3) Domestic first-class and internationally renowned faculty team: Led by the Member of Chinese Acedemy of Science (Guangyu Shi), National distinguished young scholar (Hong Liao), National Young one-thousand talents and Jiangsu Specially-appointed professors (Weifeng Rao, Huan Yu, Lin Huang, Hui Cao, chaozhi Zhang), the discipline now has 28 national and province-level talents, and already established a high-level faculty team with rational education background, academic titles, and ages.; (4) Substantial and high-level International collaboration: The foundation of world-class Yale-NUIST atmospheric Environmental Center, International Joint National laboratory of Climate and Environmental Changes (One out of three of the first-batch issued by the Ministry of Education, Prof. Hong Liao is the director), the “NUIST doctoral fund” and oversea young faculty training center, which has become an important base for the cultivation of international top-notch talents in environmental science and Engineering.
Cultivation Goals
Our discipline always focuses on fulfilling the strong needs from the emerging national high-tech industry – Environmental protection industry, and meteorological industry. The discipline aims to strengthen the basic knowledge, practical and international abilities of the graduate students, which in details are “centering on cultivation of high-level Environmental talents, featuring in atmospheric environment and environmental meteorology, cultivating innovative-practical-international talents ”. The high-level “innovative, practical, international” graduates cultivated by the discipline are able to conduct research, education tasks relevant with environmental monitoring, pollution control, policy making, etc., in various government, research institutions and enterprises.
Research directions of the discipline
The research of our discipline focused on solving various air, water, soil pollution issues, and conducted basic and applied research regarding the mechanisms of characterization, transformation and transport of the pollutants, and relevant prevention and control techniques and materials of these pollutants. After development over a decade, our discipline now has mainly five research areas, including atmospheric environment and chemistry, atmospheric pollution control, environmental/climate change and the effects, water pollution control, and environmental materials. The five directions are integrated, and has formed an intrinsic whole on “prevention, management, control, fixing” of the pollutants.
Domestic and international influence of the discipline.
(1) Strong scientific research abilities, significant research fruits, and economic benefits gained from conversion of the research. A large number of national, province-level projects, with a total funding of 137 million RMB; A large number of high-level research articles, in total 207 first-affiliation SCI papers, 102 EI papers, including ones published in the renowned environment and energy-related journals of《Environmental Science & Technology》、《Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics》、《Journal of Materials Chemistry A》、《Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews》; Invited presentations at national Environmental Chemistry Meeting, 250th ACS National Meeting, etc.; Over 200 national-issued patents, and a number of them were applied practically in various enterprises, and earned significant social and economic benefits (over 56 Million RMB);
(2) Many important positions held by our faculty. During the second Youth Olympic Game in 2014, Prof. Yan Ma was hired as the “Air quality expert”, and made significant contributions to the air quality monitoring during the game; Prof. Youfei Zheng is in charge of the WMO education, cultivate many meteorological technicians over the world; Prof. Hong Liao is the editorial board member of 《Atmospheric Environment》; Prof. Defu Xu is the guset editor of 《Water》; Prof. Fei Teng is the editorial board member of 《Frontiers in Environmental Science》, Prof. Hong Liao is the Scientific committee member of the first-class international academic organization (World Climate Research Plan, WCRP).
(3) Prof. Hong Liao was awarded the “National Outstanding Science and Technology Talent Award” (One of the 10 winners across the country, and the only one winner in the field of Environmental and Earth Science).

Research Achievements
Academic research achievements are abundant; academic exchanges are active; high-level scientific research and teaching work has been rapidly improved. The annual average amount of scientific research funds is over 20 million RMB, while more than 80 SCI papers have been published annually. Key indicators such as National major R&D plans and national funds (including key projects, major R&D plans and collections), SCI papers and patents have risen to the forefront of university. Four College-enterprise research institutes such as Nanxin University-Dongyang Fluorine Material Research Institute and Nanxin University-Songquan Environmental Protection Science and Technology Research Institute, etc., have been established successively in order to promote the cooperation between College and enterprise, which has produced good economic and social effects.
