World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Training Centre (RTC) Nanjing is located in the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (formerly named Nanjing Institute of Meteorology). Approved by the Executive Council of WMO, the RTC Nanjing was established in 1993. Under the leadership of China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), with co-sponsorship of WMO and the Ministry of Commerce of China, the RTC Nanjing has held 84 international and 29 bilateral training courses from 1990 to April 2015. By now, more than 2400 meteorologists and hydrologists from 144 countries and regions have participated in these courses, many of them become backbones of their respective National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs).

Training work of the RTC Nanjing has gained recognition of WMO and its members. In 2010, Mr. Michel Jarraud, the General Secretary of WMO, attended the 20th Anniversary of International Training in NUIST. He thought highly of the RTC Nanjing in the inscription for the University made great contribution in training the world meteorological and hydrological talents for 20 years. In April 2011, WMO evaluation expert group carried on a comprehensive evaluation to the international education and training work of the RTC Nanjing, affirming the teaching level of software and hardware facilities, strong teaching staff of atmospheric science and scientific and standardized management. As one of the most active training centres of WMO, the RTC Nanjing received high praise from WMO, for the RTC Nanjing made ‘an important contribution of the People’s Republic of China to sustainable development and the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.'

In 2012, UNESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee appointed the RTC Nanjing to be the only one training centre of the Committee.

The major courses offered by the RTC Nanjing have been designed in line with the development of meteorological science and the requirements of weather service both at home and abroad. The major courses include Weather and Climate Service, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Radar Meteorology, Satellite Meteorology, Agro-meteorology, Climate Change and Climate Information Services, etc.

According to the emerging needs of WMO members and latest scientific development, the RTC Nanjing will make further efforts to enlarge the training fields and improve the teaching quality.
