Atmospheric Science Experimental Teaching Center of Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (Observatory)

Atmospheric Science Experimental Teaching Center of Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology(Observatory)is a 49-year-old Practical Teaching Center for atmospheric science and related majors in NUIST. At present, the center is the largest practical teaching base for meteorological specialty with the best teaching environment, the largest number of talents and distinctive teaching characteristics at home and abroad. More than 60% of meteorological service backbone of China Meteorological Department have been trained in experimental practice in the center, and the center is praised as the cradle of Meteorological professionals in China.

Atmospheric Science Experimental Teaching Center was formerly the Weather Forecasting Practice Station of the Meteorology Department. In 1996, the Meteorological Station of Nanjing Institute of Meteorology was established by the Weather Forecast Practice Station, the Meteorological Service Automation Laboratory and the Agrometeorological Experimental Station. In 2001, it passed the assessment and acceptance of basic laboratories in Jiangsu universities. In 2006, it was formally renamed the Atmospheric Science Experimental Teaching Center of NUIST. In 2007, it was selected as the teaching demonstration center of Jiangsu Province. In 2008, the center was designated as a pilot project of remote weather consultation system in universities by China Meteorological Administration. The software and hardware environment of the center maintained the leading level of universities at home and abroad.

On the afternoon of January 7, 2009, Zheng Guoguang, the then Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of China Meteorological Bureau, and He Quan, vice governor of Jiangsu Province, jointly opened the Meteorological Station of NUIST and the remote consultation system between the Experimental Teaching Center of Atmospheric Science (Meteorological Station) and the China Central Meteorological Station was officially opened. The center is a teaching and research-oriented unit with high-level meteorological operational system (technical content of the Central Station), research and development ability of weather & climate research and forecast technology, and with modern education and training conditions.

At present, the center has a building area of 3860 square meters, 1376 sets of equipment, the average area of each experimental platform is more than 2.3 square meters. The center has been built with real-time monitoring functions of lightning protection, fire protection, environmental security and network information security. It is suitable for the modern working environment of meteorological teaching, scientific research, business and academic exchange. The center is able to conduct meteorological operations of modern short-term (hourly) weather forecasting and short-term climate forecasting, and has operational systems and processes of high-level meteorological stations in China.

The center aslo has FY-2 satellite receiving and processing system, Doppler radar image processing system, conventional data automatic mapping system, MICAPS 3.1 meteorological information comprehensive analysis and processing system, meteorological data database, WRF mesoscale numerical prediction model, remote audio and video weather consultation system and other operational systems. The short-term climate prediction level of the center ranks first in the country. It is one of the eight national consultation departments and is invited to participate in the annual climate trend prediction consultation during the flood season.
